Red Thread Treatment

Commonly associated with the summer during warm and wet conditions Red thread is a fungal disease on the lawn. It is identified as being a red/pink tinge to the blade of grass while the disease is most prominent. Once it starts to pass it will leave a dead straw like appearance to the lawn for a few weeks.

With this disease there are many factors that can contribute to the cause such as mainly weather conditions but also poor air flow in the lawn. Getting as much light to the lawn to help it dry out quicker rather than sitting in hot, wet conditions helps. Blunt or incorrect mower blades are another contribution.

There are practices that can be put in place to help prevent this disease such as sharpening mower blades, cutting back tree’s and shrubs to allow as much light to the lawn as possible, yearly aeration to encourage air flow and scarifying to remove thatch that can harbour unwanted spores.

Fertilising the lawn in the correct conditions can help to grow out red thread while not using harmful fungicides.
